The organizations that make up the Racism Observatory in Mexico and Central America regret the terrible tragedy that claimed the lives of 53 migrants in San Antonio, Texas, on June 27, 2022. Our solidarity is with the families of the victims and with the migrant community. These deaths are an unacceptable consequence of the racism that prevails in the immigration policies of the United States, such as Title 42 and the Migrant Protection Protocol (MPP), which deny people of the right to apply for asylum, systematically violate the principle of non-return and force asylum seekers to wait in dangerous cities on the northern border of Mexico. What happened last Monday, June 27, is a wake-up call for the authorities and governments on both sides of the border to take immediate actions aimed at protecting people in need of international protection.
